Instagram is currently testing a new feature that allows users to “dislike” comments on the platform. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced this development on Threads on February 14. He noted that some users may have already seen the “dislike” button being tested alongside the traditional comment options.

The “dislike” button will be represented by a downward-facing arrow positioned next to the existing “like” button in the comment section. While Mosseri did not provide a detailed image description, Lindsey Gamble shared a visual comparison, stating that it resembles the voting button seen on Reddit. Importantly, when users click the button, their action will remain private, as the intention is to allow users to express dissatisfaction without adding public pressure or negativity on social media.

Currently, this feature is being tested with a limited group of users, with Instagram aiming to empower individuals to have greater control over the content they encounter. In the future, the feedback generated from the “dislike” button may influence comment rankings, potentially relocating negative comments to the bottom of the section to enhance the overall user experience.

User reactions to the new feature have been mixed. Some believe it may foster a healthier commenting environment and reduce the prevalence of negative content. Conversely, there are concerns that the “dislike” button could be misused to exert pressure or encourage bullying in the online space.

To improve user interactions, Instagram has previously introduced various measures, such as keyword filtering to manage negative content. The testing of the “dislike” button is part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to create a safer and more positive social networking environment.
