A significant technological advancement has emerged with the adaptation of ChatGPT for the iPhone 3GS, a model released by Apple in 2009. A 17-year-old programmer has successfully developed a custom application, named ‘ChatGPT for Legacy iOS,’ allowing the AI chatbot ChatGPT to operate on this older device, despite the fact that at the time of its release, the concept of modern AI technology like ChatGPT did not exist.

The official ChatGPT app from OpenAI requires iPhone devices to run on iOS 17 or later, making it incompatible with older models like the iPhone 3GS. To address this limitation, the developer created a solution that utilizes the device’s existing capabilities without overburdening its outdated hardware. The app sends user requests to OpenAI’s servers through the official API and displays the results on the iPhone 3GS, thus acting as a bridge between modern AI functionalities and older technology.

The ‘ChatGPT for Legacy iOS’ app includes core features similar to those expected of contemporary ChatGPT, such as:

  • In-depth text chat that maintains conversation context.
  • The ability to save chat history for later reference.
  • Support for image uploads for analysis by ChatGPT.
  • Functionality for AI-generated images.

These features rejuvenate the iPhone 3GS, a device that would otherwise be considered obsolete.

However, there are prerequisites for users interested in utilizing ChatGPT on the iPhone 3GS. The device needs to be running iOS 6 or later. Additionally, since the application cannot be distributed through the official App Store, users must jailbreak their devices to install ‘ChatGPT for Legacy iOS’ via alternative methods. After installation, users also need to obtain a personal API key from their OpenAI account to access the app.

The ‘ChatGPT for Legacy iOS’ project highlights the creativity of the development community and the adaptability of contemporary APIs, demonstrating how modern technologies can be incorporated into seemingly outdated hardware platforms.
