Millions of OneDrive users are at risk of permanent data loss

Microsoft is set to implement a significant update to its OneDrive cloud storage service that will affect users without valid licenses. Starting January 27, any OneDrive accounts that have been inactive for 93 consecutive days will face data deletion or archiving.

This new policy focuses mainly on unlicensed OneDrive accounts, which often belong to individuals who have either left their organization, been removed from the SharePoint admin center, or had their licenses revoked by an administrator. After a period of 93 days without activity, the data associated with these accounts will be sent to the recycle bin, and after an additional 93 days, it will be permanently deleted.

Users still have options to preserve their data by reactivating their accounts or establishing a retention policy; however, they should be aware that data recovery may incur a small fee.

To avoid potential data loss, Microsoft strongly advises all OneDrive users to check the status of their accounts and take proactive steps to secure their important information. This policy change is seen as part of Microsoft’s efforts to improve security and compliance within OneDrive while highlighting the importance of protecting personal data stored on the cloud platform.
