Microsoft starts charging users for Notepad and Paint

Microsoft has announced that users will need to pay for subscriptions to access some new features in its traditional applications, Notepad and Paint. According to a report from PC World, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities, such as the image generator in Paint and the text rewrite tool in Notepad, will be accessible only to those with a paid Microsoft 365 subscription. Users will still have access to non-AI features without a subscription.

This decision comes as part of Microsoft’s broader strategy following its substantial investment in OpenAI, which has led to the incorporation of AI capabilities across various applications and services, including its Xbox gaming division and the Copilot app for Windows. As a result of these enhancements, the cost of the Microsoft 365 service has increased, currently priced at approximately $10 per month or $99 per year.

Despite these advancements, not all of Microsoft’s AI initiatives have garnered positive feedback from users. For instance, the Recall feature within Copilot, intended to enhance search capabilities by tracking user activity, has faced delays due to concerns regarding privacy and security. Reports indicated that this feature could potentially collect sensitive information, including credit card details.

Users without a Microsoft 365 subscription will still be able to utilize existing features of Notepad and Paint despite the introduction of subscription-based AI tools. More comprehensive details about these new AI offerings were shared by Microsoft on its blog in November.

An industry expert noted that Microsoft’s approach resembles a freemium model aimed at generating demand for new features. However, the expert also highlighted that offering AI functionalities for free could pose financial challenges for companies due to the high costs associated with utilizing advanced language models. As a result, more technology companies may likely explore flexible pricing models for AI-based services in the future.
