Google introduces AI phishing detection feature on Chrome

Google has recently launched a new feature in the Chrome browser that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to help users identify fraudulent websites directly on their devices. This system, known as “Client-Side Detection Brand and Intent for Scam Detection,” has been integrated into the latest Canary beta version of Chrome.

The AI-powered phishing detection system analyzes websites on local devices across various operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. By processing data locally, Google aims to address privacy concerns, ensuring that users’ login information and online activities are not sent to external servers for analysis.

This new feature is comparable to a recently introduced tool by Microsoft in its Edge browser, which also employs AI to detect malicious and phishing sites. However, while Edge users must manually activate this feature in their settings, Chrome’s phishing detection will be enabled by default once officially launched. Users interested in testing the feature can download the latest Canary beta and enable the relevant flag at chrome://flags.

In addition to this AI integration, Google has previously enhanced Chrome’s security with a full-screen warning system for high-risk downloads. Despite this measure, users still have the option to dismiss the warning by justifying it.

As AI continues to play a significant role in enhancing user experience and security, the ongoing competition between tech giants like Google and Microsoft in the cybersecurity landscape is poised to be dynamic and engaging in the future.
