Google stops supporting 3 popular Android phone models

Recent reports indicate significant security risks for Android users with devices no longer receiving official updates from Google. Notably, Google has halted monthly security patches for three previously popular smartphone models: the Google Pixel 3a, Samsung Galaxy S10, and OnePlus 7.

The discontinuation of support for these devices means they will not receive protections against newly discovered vulnerabilities, malware, and sophisticated exploits that emerge regularly. This leaves users potentially exposed to various cyber threats and risks.

This change was quietly implemented around the end of March, and it wasn’t until the release of the April security bulletin—omitting any mention of Android 12, the final operating system version for these devices—that the tech community recognized the end of support.

With security updates no longer available, the Pixel 3a, Galaxy S10, and OnePlus 7 have become appealing targets for hackers. These devices are now vulnerable to zero-day attacks, which can compromise personal data, financial information, and app security. The latest security bulletin from Google even highlights two high-risk vulnerabilities actively being exploited, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

While Samsung now offers seven years of software updates for its newer models, this framework does not extend to the aging Galaxy S10. Similarly, OnePlus has concluded its three-year support cycle for the OnePlus 7. Consequently, users of these smartphones may find themselves with devices that are effectively abandoned by both Google and their respective manufacturers.

Security experts strongly advise against continuing to use unsupported devices due to the heightened risks. Prioritizing updates is crucial not only for accessing new features but, more importantly, for safeguarding digital assets and maintaining peace of mind in an increasingly connected world.
