Google has introduced a new feature called Live Updates in the latest Android version 16 Beta 2.1. This innovative addition allows users to receive real-time notifications directly on the lock screen, in the status bar, on always-on displays, and within the notification panel. Unlike standard notifications, Live Updates provide ongoing information about specific tasks.

One of the key beneficiaries of this feature is Google Maps, which will be the first application to integrate Live Updates. Users will notice notifications represented by green arrows, making it easy to identify Google Maps alerts. The notifications will include essential details such as the upcoming time, estimated time of arrival (ETA), and pertinent information regarding each leg of the journey.

By tapping on the arrow, users will access a detailed control panel that offers further insights, including the distance remaining, the anticipated arrival time, and information about the next turn. Currently, this feature is available on the Pixel 6 Pro equipped with Android 16 Beta 2.1.

In addition to Google Maps, Live Updates will also enable users to track food delivery progress from select platforms, monitor trip distances from services like Uber or Lyft, and receive updates related to sports events. It’s important to note that this feature is still in its testing phase, and further enhancements are expected before the stable version of Android 16 launches in June.

iOS users may recognize a similar functionality, as it resembles the Live Activities feature found on the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen of iPhones, which displays multiple real-time updates.
