Microsoft advises users to throw away Windows 10 computers again

Microsoft has announced that support for the Windows 10 operating system will officially end on October 14, 2025. This brings an important transition period for users who will need to consider migrating to Windows 11 to maintain security and support in the evolving technological landscape.

Following this announcement, many users expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s approach. Some users feel that the recent guidelines provided by the company come across as dismissive of their concerns. The guidelines suggest that users consider purchasing new computers to facilitate the transition to Windows 11. Notably, the guidelines did not include information about Extended Security Updates (ESUs), which allow users to continue operating Windows 10 safely. This omission has led to concerns that Microsoft may be prioritizing profit over user safety.

Key points from Microsoft’s migration guidelines include:

  1. Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows 10 operating system is fully updated with the latest security patches.
  2. Data Backup: Safeguard personal files by backing them up on external devices or cloud storage.
  3. Secure Erasure: When disposing of old devices, securely erase all information.
  4. Device Recycling: Microsoft encourages users to consider recycling options for old devices or trading them in for new ones.

Despite these guidelines, many users have criticized the lack of detailed instructions on how to upgrade to Windows 11. The emphasis on purchasing new hardware has led to perceptions that the recommendations may be more of a sales strategy than genuine assistance.

For Windows 10 users, several options are currently available:

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 if your hardware is compatible.
  • Purchase a new computer as recommended by Microsoft.
  • Opt for Extended Security Updates (ESU) to continue using Windows 10 securely.
  • Explore alternatives such as Linux, a completely free operating system.

In light of these changes, it’s important for users to carefully evaluate their options to ensure both safety and efficiency in their technology usage.
