As many Android manufacturers continue to finalize the rollout of Android 15, Google is already progressing with the development of Android 16.
Testing for Android 16 began in November 2024, marked by the release of its first developer preview. The next public beta followed in January 2025. Initially, only Google Pixel devices were eligible for testing, but other brands like Xiaomi and OnePlus have since joined the early access program, allowing select users to experience Android 16 prior to its official launch.
Currently, eligible devices for the Android 16 beta include a range of Pixel models (including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a), along with Xiaomi 15, Xiaomi 14T Pro, and OnePlus 13.
These early builds are designed primarily for experienced users and developers. Those unfamiliar with the process of installing custom ROMs are advised to avoid experimentation due to the potential risk of bricking their devices. Additionally, these builds may contain numerous undiscovered bugs, so they should not be installed on primary devices.
Noteworthy features of Android 16 include the introduction of Live Updates, which will display critical information on the lock screen and status bar, allowing users to easily monitor high-priority notifications such as navigation, food delivery, and carpooling—similar to the Live Activities feature on iOS.
Another significant enhancement is the new photo picker, which bolsters privacy by granting users control over app access to their media library. This allows them to share only selected photos and videos when uploading.
In addition, Google is testing health records support within Health Connect, expected to be included in the final release. Android 16 will also feature an Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR) capability, helping to conserve battery life by adjusting the screen refresh rate according to user activity.
The integration of Gemini AI will be deeper in Android 16, although specific details have not yet been revealed. Furthermore, lock screen widgets will make a return for the first time since Android 5.0 Lollipop, alongside a variety of other small but beneficial updates.
The stable version of Android 16 is anticipated to be launched in Q2 2025, likely before the end of June, which is earlier compared to many previous Android releases that typically occurred in August or later.
